Mark Michelson is Associate Director-General for Investment Promotion at Invest Hong Kongthe Hong Kong Government department responsible for attracting and retaining foreign direct investment. He is the leader of a team responsible for the department's marketing, communications and knowledge management seconded from APCO Worldwide, a global public affairs and strategic communications consultancy, where he is Vice Chairman, Asia.
Dr. Michelson assists corporations, governments and other organizations to develop, communicate and achieve their goals; build support for their reputations, positions, products and services; anticipate and advocate their issues; facilitate entry into new markets; and prepare for and manage crisis situations. In addition, he is a frequent speaker on regional economic and political issues in the media and at conferences and seminars. Dr Michelson has spent over 35 years working in the Asia/Pacific region, part of which he spent in Japan. Arriving in Hong Kong in 1980, he served as a senior consultant to international companies on trade, investment, economics, politics and other issues affecting business operations.
Dr Michelson earned his BA from Carleton College and doctorate from the University of Illinois in Japanese studies. He also attended Harvard University, the University of Tokyo, where he was a Fulbright Fellow, and the New York University Graduate School of Business. He served as the 1996 Chairman of the American Chamber of Commerce in Hong Kong.
