Speaker Garry Powers

Garry Powers is Director of Economic Development Initiatives with CTC Public Benefit Corporation (PBC). PBC is a national 501(c)(3) corporation that specializes in building teams that generate economic development and workforce development solutions. Powers has 20 years of experience managing economic development and workforce development projects. He has been the project manager or principal author of a number of knowledge-based economic development strategies and action plans, including statewide hydrogen and biotechnology strategies.

He was also the project manager for the recently completed Manufacturing Cluster HUBS initiative. As a part of this initiative, two-year colleges in four states worked together to develop entrepreneurship education and training programs for top managers in existing manufacturing firms. He is the chair of the Entrepreneurship Working Group for the South Carolina Competitiveness Council. The council was formed in 2004 to develop and drive South Carolina's long-term economic strategy. He is currently involved in a number of U.S. Department of Defense-funded technology transfer programs, including a technology incubation program based in Florida. He has also worked extensively with two-year colleges, state workforce development organizations, the U.S. Department of Labor, the U.S. Economic Development Administration, and the U.S. Department of Education on cluster-based strategies and action plans.

From 1987-94, Powers was Manager of Strategic Research for the South Carolina Department of Commerce, where he managed the proactive marketing research programs for the state's primary industrial recruitment agency. Powers earned his Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Houston and his Master of Science degree from the University of South Carolina.
