Speaker Kathryn Studwell

Kathryn Studwell is a Senior Associate with Applied Development Economics in Walnut Creek, California. She has 25 years experience in designing and facilitating collaborative approaches to regional economic development and has extensive expertise in the formation of industry cluster organizations. Kathryn has completed over twenty cluster studies for a broad range of industry groups including: food and agriculture; semiconductor; biotech; plastics; aerospace; optics; water flow technology; and software. She has applied this breadth of experience to leverage cross-cluster relationships to catalyze innovations and industry growth and renewal. For the Fresno Area Regional Collaborative Initiative, she completed cluster analysis and facilitated the formation of the water flow technology cluster in the San Joaquin Valley, home to the poorest communities in the United States. The success of this cluster led directly to the formation of the International Center for Water Technology and the re-location of companies to the Fresno Area as well as stimulating the establishment of additional cluster organizations and a general groundswell of hope and renewal in California's Central Valley.

Kathryn also works with regional agencies and organizations to develop regional economic strategies, conduct benchmarking studies and facilitate goal setting processes. She has authored numerous regional economic strategies for regions in the western United States. Kathryn is the recipient of the American Planning Association's National Planning Award for her leadership role in Silicon Valley's Strategic Vision program where she facilitated the work of over 100 business and community leaders to craft economic, social and environmental strategies for the future of Silicon Valley and then helped launch a public/private partnership to implement selected initiatives. She recently received an award from the International Economic Development Council for strategic planning work with the Northwest Food Processors Association, which was the result of a unique three-state partnership to address the regionŐs key industry competitiveness issues.

Kathryn holds a Masters in city planning from the University of California at Berkeley and a Bachelor of Science in agricultural economics from the University of Idaho.
